Munich is a city with nearly 1000 years of history and has many stories to tell – there is so much to say, to see and to learn: founded by Duke Henry the Lion in 1158, it passed to the Wittelsbach Family in 1180 and they made Munich their residence and the capital of Bavaria. They ruled for 700 years and left a lasting cultural heritage that can still be enjoyed in almost every neighborhood of Munich. By now Munich is a metropolis of nearly 1 1/2 million inhabitants, making it the 3rd largest city in Germany and certainly one of the most popular and beautiful.

Some of the cultural highpoints: Jugendstil (Germany’s version of Art Nouveau) was born in Munich with the painter Franz von Stuck; Expressionism developed when the painters Wassily Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky, Gabriele Muenter, and other artists founded the „Blaue Reiter“ (Blue Rider), an association of artists that revolutionized the arts, foremost the art of painting.  Other renowned persons from the world of the arts who called Munich home at some point in the past:  Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Richard Wagner, and Lyonel Feininger. And contributing to contemporary history the resistance fighters Sophie and Hans Scholl and Professor Huber, (associated with the  Ludwig-Maximillian-University)  and Josef Ratzinger, the former Pope Benedict XVI.
